Notes
Addison
Branch
is
a
one-story
contemporary
building
of
brick
and
steel.
Cleveland
architect
,
Stephen
J.
Bucchieri's
inspiration
included:
the
Cleveland
Museum
of
Art's
indoor
garden
court
,
Cambridge
University's
medieval
bookshelves
and
Jefferson
Branch's
interior.
Bucchieri
used
burned
manganese
ironspot
brick
for the
exterior
walls.
The
interior
has a
barrel
vaulted
ceiling
and
clerestory
windows
that
provide
natural
light.
The
glass
brick
front
window
is
a
stylized
Egyptian
cross
shape.
Bucchieri
described
the the
design
and its
responsibility
to the
neighborhood's
streetscape
in the
following
quote:
"...
the
entrance
was
set
back
from the
sidewalk
to
create
a
buffer
between
the
library
and the
street.
At the
same
time
, the
monumental
window
in the
main
reading
room
directly
fronts
onto the
street.
The
plan
establishes
an
order
and
formality
amidst
the
disorder
of the
surrounding
area.
The
interior
is
also
ordered
and
rational
space.
While
the
exterior
of the
building
refers
to the
highly
durable
vocabulary
of
Cleveland's
industrial
heritage
, the
interior
reflects
the
cultural
tradition
of
Cleveland
and the
traditional
library."
