In order to carry the increasing weight of books which is
being continuously added to the Library, with the co-operation
of your honorable body, and under the supervision of competent
architects, the floors have been thoroughly strengthened from
the basement up, by the addition of heavy iron pillars and

girders. Detailed plans have been submitted for largely in-creasing
the shelf-room of the Reference department.
We are happy to report that the manuscript for the long
promised catalogue is completed, the work of printing about
one-fourth done, and in the near future we shall present a new,
accurate and complete author, subject and title catalogue,
which will be a credit to the Library, and of great value to
our reading patrons.
For more full and detailed statements as to the condition
of the Library, and the work done, we beg to refer to the ap-pended
report of the Librarian.
Respectfully submitted,
H. C. BRAINERD, Pres't.
6 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.
Report of the Librarian,
To the Honorablethe Public Library Board:
GENTLEMEN—In compliance with Rule 1 7 for the Cleve-land
Public Library, I have the honor of submitting to you
the following statement of the work done in the Library dur-ing
the year ending Aug. 31, 1888, and as nearly as possible
of the condition of the Library at the close of the year, being
the Twentieth Annual Report of the Librarian:
BOOKS.
According to the last annual report there were on hand,
Aug. 31, 1 8 8 7 , in all departments 5 1 , 3 9 7 . There have been
added during the year 3 , 3 7 3 volumes, deducted by exchange,
wear and loss, as far as known, 340, making an estimated net
gain of 3 , 0 3 3 , and a total of 5 4 , 4 3 0 books on hand August
3 1 , 1888.
The pressure of work incident to the catalogue printing,
rendered it impossible for me to give my personal attention to
a careful examination of the condition of the entire Library.
The examination was rendered more difficult by the lack of ad-equate
shelf-room in the Reference department, many vol-umes
belonging there being packed away with the duplicates.
Owing to these circumstances the foregoing statement is
based in part upon actual examination, and in part upon es-timates.
It is certain that some further allowance should be
made for lost books. The contemplated addition of the shelv-ing
in the Reference department, and the completion of the
catalogue, will render it possible to present an accurate state-ment
of the condition of the Library.
Further details are given in Appendix A.
The total purchase of books during the year amounts to
2,171 volumes, for which the sum of $2,619.81 was paid, or an
average of $1.21 per volume.
7 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.
A statement of the books added to the Circulating de-partment,
by classes, may be found in Appendix B. A com-parison
with the corresponding table in last year's report will
show a notable decrease in the proportion of fiction purchased.
An examination of the additions to the Library will show this
to be the result of a careful discrimination on the part of the
Book committee as to the character of the novels purchased.
The best stories published during the year have been added,
as well as many additional duplicate copies of standard novels
already in the Library. A comparison with last year shows
a slight decrease in the issue of English fiction, and also of
juvenile books.
Of books condemned during this and previous years, the
following have been given to the city institutions :
Unclassified and Night Schools 205
Engine House 58
Infirmary , 189
Total 452
PAMPHLETS.
There are on hand:

GIFTS.
A list of the gifts to the Library, with names of the donors,
is given in Appendix C.
WORK IN THE LIBRARY CIRCULATING DEPARTMENT.
This department has been open 307 days, being every
week day in the year, except the holidays.
The hours are from 8:30 A. M. to 9:00 p. M.
The number of books issued during the year was 209,556,
or an average of 682 daily, showing an increase of 9,905 over
last year.
The number of membership cards issued was 3,415, mak-ing
the whole number issued in the new series since January
1, 1886, 16,453. A detailed statement of the work of this
department may be found in Appendix D.
8 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT.
This department has been opened 359 days, or every day
in the year except the holidays.
The use of the books was very much interfered with for
several days by the moving of cases, in order to do the work
mentioned in the President's report.
The hours have been from 9:00 A. M. to 10:00 p. M. on
week days, except that from July 3 to August 31, the room was
closed at 9:00 p. M. ; and from 1:00 to 9:00 p. M. on Sundays
throughout the year.
The Reference department and the Reading room were
visited by 61,347 people during the year, being a daily average
of 171, and an increase of 3,889. Of these visits 12,282 were
on Sunday, being a daily average of 236.
Further details are given in Appendix E.
A list of newspapers and periodicals currently taken and
on file in the Reading-room may be found in Appendix F.
From this it appears that 264 periodicals and newspapers are
taken at an expense of $742.94.
BINDING.
It will be seen by the figures given in the President's
report that the amount spent for binding is less than any previ-ous
year since 1881. This is due, mainly, to the fact that the
large expenditures of the last two years had placed the Library
in fair condition in that respect. The books are bound in half-morocco,
excepting some of the periodicals for the Reference
department, which are bound in various bindings, uniformly
with the sets to which they belong, and a few of the smallest
books in the Circulating department, which are bound in half-roan.
Full details are given in Appendix G. In addition to the
work noted there, 5,682 volumes have been repaired by the
assistants in the Library.
The Librarian's cash account may be found in Appen-dix
H.
