For a more full and detailed statement of the condition of
the Library, its progress, and the character of the work done, we
beg to refer you to the appended report of the Librarian.
By order of the Library Board.
Respectfully submitted,
H. C. BRAINERD, Pres't,
REPORT DF THE LIBRARIAN.
To the Honorable, the Public Library Board:
GENTLEMEN.—In accordance with Rule 17 for the Cleve-land
Public Library, I have the honor of submitting to you the
following statement of the work done during the year ending
August 31st, 1886, and of the condition of the Library at the close
of the same year, being the Eighteenth Annual Report of the
Librarian.
THE LIBRARY ROOMS.
During the summer just past, the ceilings of the Circula-ting
Department, and of the halls on the second and third floors
have been papered and the walls painted, greatly improving their
appearance. The ladies' room on the second floor was also
papered and very neatly refurnished. At the beginning of the
year jet burners were placed on the gas lights between the cases,
and later a Sleeman Gas Governor was placed on the main supply
pipe. The supply of gas is very insufficient. The book-cases in
neither Department are well lighted, and the light at the read-ing
tables in the Reference Room is very poor. I would most
strongly urge upon the Board the advisability of introducing the
incandescent electric light at the earliest possible time, as being
by far the best light yet devised for Library purposes.

6 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.
The examination of the Library at the close of the year, by
actual count of volumes on the shelves, shows the following on
hand—
In Circulating Department 32,555
In Reference Department 14,956
In Librarian's office 225
Duplicates and unclassified 1067
At High Schools 34
48,837
Missing 608
I am unable to account for the above deficiency which
appears to be almost entirely from the Circulating Department.
It is probable that the changes which have been made in the
Library shelf list, and in the location of books on the shelves,
may account for a portion of it, but I am very reluctantly forced
to the opinion that a considerable number of books have been
stolen from the Library.
The condemned books have been given to the city institu-tions
as follows :

being an increase duriog the year of 544.
A statement of accessions to the Library from all sources is
given in Appendix B.
A record of gifts to the Library, with the names of the
donors, is given in Appendix C.
THE WORK IN THE LIBRARY—CIRCULATING DEPARTMENT.
This Department has been open 307 days, being every wreek
day in the year except the usual holidays.
The hours are from 8.30 A. M. to 9 P. M.
A different system of charging books having been decided
upon by the Board, it was placed in operation January 1st.
From September 1st to December 31st, 1395 cards had been
issued, bringing the entire number of the old series to 23,340.
The number of membership cards at close of last year was 21,944
instead of 22,266 as reported.
8 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.
On January 1st the issue of a new series was begun and 8,893
had been issued to August 31st, which probably is a fair indica-tion
of the number at present using the Library.
The business is done under great disadvantage from the lack
of an adequate catalogue.
REFERENCE DEPARTMENT.
This Department has been open 359 days, being every day
in the year except the legal holidays.
The hours being from 9 A. M. to 10 P. M. on week days, and
from 1 to 9 P. M. on Sundays.
The report of this Department shows a slight decrease from
that of last year. A tabulated statement of the work of this
Department may be found in Appendix D.
A list of the newspapers and other periodicals on file in the
Reading Room may be found in Appendix E.
CATALOGUING.
The work of cataloguing has been pushed forward as rapidly
as possible. It was necessarily suspended during the month of
January owing to the extra work incident to the adoption of the
new charging system, and in part interrupted during February,
but was resumed as soon as possible.
The cards are "now nearly completed, and within a short
time the re-arrangement of the books on the shelves and the
numbering of the books may be carried forward.
BINDING.
A complete statement of the binding of the Library may be
found in Appendix F.
The amount of binding is greater than heretofore, as the
careful examination of the Library, which is made in cataloguing,
has shown that many books on the shelves need binding. The
binding bills are likely to be large during the coming year for
the same reason. Most of the binding for the year has been in a
style which wTas adopted by the Book Committee after a careful
consideration of the matter, and which is greatly superior in
appearance and durability to the former style and somewhat
more expensive. A large number of books have been repaired
in the Library of which no record has been kept.
A summary of the Librarian's cash account will be found in
Appendix G.
8 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT.
As to the future work of the Library, the most important
matter is the completion of the catalogue. In addition to this, I
would urge upon the attention of the Board the lighting of the
Library by electricity, heretofore spoken of in this report, the
addition to our charging system, of a book card, and the arrange-ment
of a special reading room and library for young people.
Upon these subjects I hope to make more specific recommenda-tions
in the communications which it is my duty to make to the
Board from month to month.
Respectfully submitted,
WM. H. BRETT, Librarian.

For a more full and detailed statement of the condition of the Library, its progress, and the character of the work done, we beg to refer you to the appended report of the Librarian. By order of the Library Board. Respectfully submitted, H. C. BRAINERD, Pres't, REPORT DF THE LIBRARIAN. To the Honorable, the Public Library Board: GENTLEMEN.—In accordance with Rule 17 for the Cleve-land Public Library, I have the honor of submitting to you the following statement of the work done during the year ending August 31st, 1886, and of the condition of the Library at the close of the same year, being the Eighteenth Annual Report of the Librarian. THE LIBRARY ROOMS. During the summer just past, the ceilings of the Circula-ting Department, and of the halls on the second and third floors have been papered and the walls painted, greatly improving their appearance. The ladies' room on the second floor was also papered and very neatly refurnished. At the beginning of the year jet burners were placed on the gas lights between the cases, and later a Sleeman Gas Governor was placed on the main supply pipe. The supply of gas is very insufficient. The book-cases in neither Department are well lighted, and the light at the read-ing tables in the Reference Room is very poor. I would most strongly urge upon the Board the advisability of introducing the incandescent electric light at the earliest possible time, as being by far the best light yet devised for Library purposes. V O L U M E S I N L I B R A R Y. The examination of the Library at the close of the year, by actual count of volumes on the shelves, shows the following on hand— In Circulating Department 32,555 In Reference Department 14,956 In Librarian's office 225 Duplicates and unclassified 1067 At High Schools 34 48,837 Missing 608 I am unable to account for the above deficiency which appears to be almost entirely from the Circulating Department. It is probable that the changes which have been made in the Library shelf list, and in the location of books on the shelves, may account for a portion of it, but I am very reluctantly forced to the opinion that a considerable number of books have been stolen from the Library. The condemned books have been given to the city institu-tions as follows : Infirmary 405 Workhouse 389 Unclassified schools « 199 993 The balance are on hand. PAMPHLETS. There are on hand at the Central High School 212 West High School <1 In the Library : • 870 1153 being an increase duriog the year of 544. A statement of accessions to the Library from all sources is given in Appendix B. A record of gifts to the Library, with the names of the donors, is given in Appendix C. THE WORK IN THE LIBRARY—CIRCULATING DEPARTMENT. This Department has been open 307 days, being every wreek day in the year except the usual holidays. The hours are from 8.30 A. M. to 9 P. M. A different system of charging books having been decided upon by the Board, it was placed in operation January 1st. From September 1st to December 31st, 1395 cards had been issued, bringing the entire number of the old series to 23,340. The number of membership cards at close of last year was 21,944 instead of 22,266 as reported. 8 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT. On January 1st the issue of a new series was begun and 8,893 had been issued to August 31st, which probably is a fair indica-tion of the number at present using the Library. The business is done under great disadvantage from the lack of an adequate catalogue. REFERENCE DEPARTMENT. This Department has been open 359 days, being every day in the year except the legal holidays. The hours being from 9 A. M. to 10 P. M. on week days, and from 1 to 9 P. M. on Sundays. The report of this Department shows a slight decrease from that of last year. A tabulated statement of the work of this Department may be found in Appendix D. A list of the newspapers and other periodicals on file in the Reading Room may be found in Appendix E. CATALOGUING. The work of cataloguing has been pushed forward as rapidly as possible. It was necessarily suspended during the month of January owing to the extra work incident to the adoption of the new charging system, and in part interrupted during February, but was resumed as soon as possible. The cards are "now nearly completed, and within a short time the re-arrangement of the books on the shelves and the numbering of the books may be carried forward. BINDING. A complete statement of the binding of the Library may be found in Appendix F. The amount of binding is greater than heretofore, as the careful examination of the Library, which is made in cataloguing, has shown that many books on the shelves need binding. The binding bills are likely to be large during the coming year for the same reason. Most of the binding for the year has been in a style which wTas adopted by the Book Committee after a careful consideration of the matter, and which is greatly superior in appearance and durability to the former style and somewhat more expensive. A large number of books have been repaired in the Library of which no record has been kept. A summary of the Librarian's cash account will be found in Appendix G. 8 LIBRARIAN'S REPORT. As to the future work of the Library, the most important matter is the completion of the catalogue. In addition to this, I would urge upon the attention of the Board the lighting of the Library by electricity, heretofore spoken of in this report, the addition to our charging system, of a book card, and the arrange-ment of a special reading room and library for young people. Upon these subjects I hope to make more specific recommenda-tions in the communications which it is my duty to make to the Board from month to month. Respectfully submitted, WM. H. BRETT, Librarian.
